The history of The Goat House starts with Kaladi, a legendary Ethiopian goatherd who discovered the coffee plant around 850 AD. According to popular legend, Kaladi noticed that when his goats chewed on the bright red berries of a certain bush, they became more energetic (hence jumping goats). Kaladi brought the berries to a Sufi monk, who disapproved of their use and threw them into a fire, from which an enticing aroma billowed. The roasted beans were quickly raked from the embers, ground up, and dissolved in hot water, yielding the world’s first cup of coffee.

The Goat House was formerly home to Fayale Coffee, where the building was used for roasting coffee beans. The name ’Fayale’, roughly translating to ‘goat’ in Ethiopian, is inspired by this legendary story of Kaladi. The house of Fayale, or the house of ‘goat’ was then re worked to create the name we go by today, Goat House
